PFA is the leading choice of disaster mental health subject matter experts to be used during the first two-three weeks following a catastrophic event. It is one among many core competencies related to disaster mental health service delivery. Other core competencies include cross-cultural awareness, knowledge about the needs of special populations, and knowledge and skills related to:

                - working in large group settings;
                - self-care strategies;
                - substance abuse;
                - team formation and more.

Core competency training is included in the programs offered here.

Note:  Recent online training materials and forthcoming phone apps (developed by myself and others) are intended to reduce knowledge and skill decay that can occur between training and response to a catastrophic event. Virtual training is designed to supplement, not replace face-to-face training.

Since 1997, the evolving programs described here have helped guide federal policymakers and program administrators to set practice guidelines and develop emergency response teams and networks.

Training programs have been attended by more than 9,000 mental health professionals including: psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed marriage and family therapists, emergency medical technicians,counselors, chaplains, police, fire department personnel, school counselors,substance abuse counselors, occupational therapists, hospital administrators, teachers, and other professionals.

Paraprofessional training offered to help public health agencies address potential surge capacity following major catastrophes.
